What really stuck with me was the day in class when we all sat around in a circle talking about the criticisms of volunteering. The argument was about whether people volunteer to be recognized or because it was just something that they did because they felt driven to. Everyone was open and valued each others opinion, though none of us could agree on an actual middle ground. It was interesting having every one share their views and their experiences, some people who I though would be more positive and think that volunteering came from a pure place were actually relatively pessimistic. It got me thinking and I've come to the conclusion that that there are both kinds of people and then some that have gray area on either end of the spectrum. There has to be people who do it for not recognition, though I'm sure that there are some that do and those people, obviously, are going to be talked about more. Either way, I believe that the service a person does is still worth something and is not invalidated by their motives whatever they are. I think that people can change where they are on the spectrum as well. Many people who start out doing service for school or resume building grow to enjoy it do it more thus changing where they are on the spectrum.
