What?
Our serve dinner had a great turn out and was so much fun! I don't really like to do many group events just because I often feel more comfortable in a smaller setting but I am very glad I went and participated. Everyone seemed to have had a good time and really enjoyed the company of our old and new SERVE members which was very really cool to see. I do feel like we are a lot closer with the other serve members who we would otherwise have little interaction with.
So What?
I hadn't had anything that wasn't made by VT Dining in such a long time it was incredibly refreshing to have something made in a normal kitchen, even if it was canned soup and grilled cheese. I didn't expect to appreciate eating dinner with everyone like that, it was so crazy and packed I figured someone would get lost in the mix and not get anything. When people were over looked or something though, another person called out with them so they couldn't be forgotten. Even though fighting for your right to a grilled cheese or another brownie could be considered unimportant or insignificant in the grand scheme of things, I think the little things add up and those can really make a difference to someone having a bad day for feeling alone. I know this event was for sure more social than project or change based, but this experience made it so that I think a lot of us could be less scared or sheepish about going on trips with the older members to make a difference, like the spring break trip. It brought us closer and that was different from before.
Now What?
Through this experience I realized how well suited a group we are for one another. Many of us are so different and probably wouldn’t be friends if it wasn’t for this living learning community but because we have that in common we kind of have a family within one another. I would love to do another one of these dinners and hopefully more group activities next semester. The grilled cheese idea was really great because they were so efficient so the next group will have to think of another thing to make in mass quantities or just follow in their footsteps and have a grilled cheese event.
