Community work is always beneficial because it creates a better place to live for the inhabitants. The volunteers could be from both the outside community or the community itself. If they are from the community themselves it often improves moral for all residents. If there are volunteers that are outsiders they might not understand the communities structure or could cause the people they are working for to become dependent on an outside source that might not be reliable for forever. Ultimately though, I believe that the pros outweigh the cons, therefore it is more beneficial to do community work than it is to not.
When I would volunteer it was usually through my church. Last time I when on a mission trip it was with a group called Pittsburg Project.
The PP was very cognizant of the impact it had on the community and often hired members to work with and for the project. Even though the headquarters where we stayed wasn't in a very good area, it was considered very safe because the people respected the people and appreciated what they were doing.
Most of the work we did was home repair or beautifying. I believed we were effective because we created helped people be proud of their homes again and made them more functional for people with special needs.
The most satisfying part of community service is a job that ended on time and looks great. I always found looking back on what we did to get to that point gratifying. I also really enjoy talking to the home owners about their stories.
Because of my service-learning, I am a better person. I am more humble and understand my privilege.
